I Go Down To The Shore

I go down to the shore in the morning
and depending on the hour the waves
are rolling in or moving out,
and I say, oh, I am miserable,
what shall —
what should I do? And the sea says
in its lovely voice:
Excuse me, I have work to do.

Robert Penn Warren, All the King's Men

"When you get born your father and mother lost something out of themselves, and they're going to bust a hame trying to get it back and you are it. They know they can't get it all back but they will get as big a chunk out of you as they can."
